Govee Smart LED Strip

The great particularity of this model is to be found on the side of its musical connectivity. A true creator of atmosphere, it actually incorporates microphones that allow it to synchronize with the surrounding music.

The Govee Smart LED strip has the lowest price of this selection, but it’s no less powerful. Indeed, it is the only one to feature a built-in microphone system that allows you to synchronize the lighting with a nearby music source. A true mood setter, it also offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections that make it compatible with Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant, via Echo and Google Home. Admittedly, the brand does not inform us about the number of lumens made available, but according to users, the 150 intensity-adjustable LEDs (70%) do the job perfectly.

If this device manages to stand out from its competitors, it is all above because it is the only one that offers compatibility with Philips Hue (through its hub) and Samsung SmartThings.

This LED strip is most unusual. For good reason, it works with the Zigbee protocol, which makes it compatible with various hubs, including the brand’s own (of course) and the very famous Hue connection bridge. If you opt for the latter, you will then be able to manage your acquisition orally, via Amazon Alexa. An appreciable means of control that will add to a possibility of adjusting the band via the dedicated application and / or via the Samsung SmartThings application.

Honorable Mentions

Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus

A premium model. The reason why this model is one of the most popular is that it is very high performance. Like our best mid-range and high-end models, it offers no less than 16 million colors and shades of white, ranging from 2000 K to 6500 K. With 1600 lumens, it’s one of the most flexible light sources because you can cut and shape it to your liking.

Eve Light Strip

Appreciated but with some flaws. This LED Light strip has some convincing assets, including its 1800 lumens and its extendable nature up to 32 feet. However, even though its after-sales service is highly praised by users, it seems to suffer from many false contacts, which is unfortunate considering the price.

How to choose your LED strip?

LED strips have been making their way into our homes for many years now. More aesthetically pleasing than traditional light bulbs, they offer more character to your home, while fulfilling their role as a lighting device.

Like speakers, thermostats and scales, they have recently been hit by the connected wave, so they now present themselves as true smart devices.

While this new possibility means greater convenience, it can also contribute to losing consumers, who often find themselves quite helpless when faced with the multitude of models on the market.

So, to help you make the choice that is most likely to meet your needs, we have listed a few features to consider.

But before we go any further, you should know that there are several types of LED strips:

3528 LED strips: more intended for small lighting, they can only display one color (except for “party” strips). They generally consume little electricity (4.8 watts/meter) and have a very attractive price.

LED strip 2835: While these models are newer than LED 3528, they are just as single-color as them. Their distinguishing feature is their efficiency – much higher than their more traditional counterparts – as well as their power consumption, since they actually use 12 watts per meter.

The 5050 LED strips: these are the most common. They are not only very convenient to use, but also have an excellent performance and an incredible lighting capacity. There are 3 types of LED strips, which are: RGB LED strips, combining 3 points of light to make a multitude of colors (except, perhaps, true white); RGBW LED strips, which have a part of each LED dedicated to white color; and finally, RGB + variable white strips, which will allow you to vary the temperature of white, in addition to RGB.

LED strips 5630/5730: known to be the most powerful on the market, they have a very high brightness, for a consumption of 16.8 watts per meter. Note that between LED 5630 and LED 5730, only the name changes. Indeed, they have the same characteristics, including that of not existing in RGB format.

Once you have determined which of these types is most suitable for you, you will then consider :

The length of the strip: this criterion is one of the most important since it necessarily determines the way you will use your LED. You should know that more and more models can now be cut or extended, to allow you to modulate them according to your convenience.

The number of LEDs per meter: generally, the ribbons integrate from 30 to 60 LEDs per meter. The ideal is, of course, to turn to this second possibility since you will enjoy a more homogeneous brightness, as well as a better compromise between power and consumption. Moreover, you should know that if there are more consequent devices (exceeding, therefore, the 60 LEDs), they are much less advantageous in terms of consumption…

Intensity: to be able to state the intensity of your potential acquisition, you must refer to the number of lumens. Thus, the more the latter is consistent, the more the brightness is at the rendezvous.

The color temperature: this is expressed in Kelvins (K) and gives an idea of the neutrality of white. For information, warm white is estimated at 3000 K, natural white is around 4500 K, and cool white around 6000 K.

Voltage: 12V LED strips are the most common on the market due to their safe nature. To work optimally, however, they must incorporate an amplifier every 5 meters and a transformer to power them. This is not the case with 230V LED strips, which, apart from a power adapter, usually do not need anything else.

Waterproofing: This is a very important criterion, as it determines how easy it is to use the ribbon in question. Therefore, if it has an IP20 rating, it means that it is not waterproof. On the contrary, if it has an IP65 (silicone layer) or IP66/68 (plastic sheath), it means that it can be placed in a humid environment (but not submerged).

Connectivity: as we pointed out in our introduction, the ribbons can now be connected. While some require Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth connections, others require bridges (hubs) and can even be controlled by voice, via Amazon Alexa, the Google Assistant or, again, Apple’s HomeKit.
